Understanding the different types of suits

The suit — often referred to as a “costume” by our French cousins — is of crucial importance in a man’s wardrobe, regardless of his age or profession. Indeed, a well-tailored outfit gives you a distinguished appearance and enhances your presence at your events.

A bit of history to begin! As you know, the men’s suit was once highly ornate and eccentric. However, it became simpler in Great Britain in the 17th century. It was also toward the end of the 18th century that the tie replaced the lace jabot, at a time when French revolutionaries began wearing trousers. In the 19th century, certain English aristocrats and dandies began wearing frock coats, tailcoats, and morning coats, which laid the foundation for the modern suit-and-tie we know today. A noteworthy fact: in 1855, a man (Edward VII, for those interested!) first wore a suit made of the same fabric.

The suit later evolved into a more functional design. In part due to the popularity of sports, men replaced the frock coat with the straight-cut jacket, which was much more practical. Later, with the rapid rise of commerce and industry in the 19th century, the simple suit became the style associated with influential men. Symbolizing Western modernity and wealth, its popularity surged and it has since been worn around the world. Check out this page for more details!

In this article, we are pleased to introduce you to the different types of men’s suits, many of which are available in our stores across Quebec. You will also learn more about the characteristics that distinguish ready-to-wear from custom-made. Enjoy your reading!

TWO-PIECE SUIT VS THREE-PIECE SUIT

To begin with, there are two main categories of suits. First, the “two-piece” consists of a matching jacket and trousers, giving it an elegant and classic look. The “three-piece” suit, on the other hand, also includes a fitted, buttoned vest that perfectly complements the jacket and trousers. This element adds a more sophisticated touch to the outfit. Note that there are different vest styles (e.g., classic, shawl lapel, peak lapel), but regardless of which one you wear, you should never fasten the bottom button near the waist — tradition requires it!

As a general rule, remember that the choice between these two options depends on the level of formality you are aiming for and your personal style preferences.

Are you hesitating between a two-piece suit and a three-piece suit? Ask our stylists at Ernest for advice! Our menswear experts will ask you questions about the event you’re dressing for and provide personalized recommendations.

THE CLASSIC SUIT

As mentioned earlier, a classic suit is an elegant combination of a jacket and trousers that match perfectly. As its name suggests, it features an unembellished jacket. Its lines are clean, its pockets and lapels are discreet, and its cut is simple.

The trousers are tailored to perfection, following precise rules, completing the outfit. This clothing choice remains appropriate for various occasions, whether formal, professional, or social. At Ernest, we recommend the classic suit to help you stand out in a job interview or to make a great impression during a professional meeting, for example. If your accessories are of good quality, you simply can’t go wrong with this choice!

THE SPORT SUIT

Also consisting of a matching jacket and trousers, the sports suit features a versatile style that is easier to wear than the classic suit. Unlike a “formal” suit, it emphasizes comfort and versatility. The jacket may include more casual details (e.g., patch pockets) or a less structured design.

The trousers, for their part, are often more comfortable, sometimes made from a less rigid fabric than that of a classic suit. A sports suit is ideal for less formal occasions. We therefore recommend this outfit to stay stylish during a weekend activity or for a first date (those famous Tinder dates and the like!).

THE TUXEDO

Are you attending an event with a dress code that specifies “formal evening wear,” or wondering which suit to choose for a wedding? This is the outfit you need! Often called a “tuxedo,” it is undoubtedly a type of suit reserved for special occasions. Indeed, this attire embodies formal elegance with its black jacket featuring a tailored fit and satin lapels, its matching trousers with a satin stripe on the side, and, in most cases, its bow tie. Worn with or without a vest, it is the ideal choice for a special occasion such as a wedding, gala, or ceremony. Very important: a tuxedo shirt must be immaculate, and the shoes must be polished!

THE DOUBLE-BREASTED SUIT

The jacket of a double-breasted suit for men is characterized by two wide overlapping lapels. It features two columns of parallel buttons (usually four or six). This slightly vintage- style cut draws attention to your upper body, enhancing your build. Favored by many men with a strong sense of style, these suits are undoubtedly a bolder clothing choice. Stylist’s tip: for a more contemporary silhouette, avoid fastening the bottom button.

THE SINGLE-BREASTED SUIT

This suit style, whether it has two or three buttons, is paired with trousers featuring horizontal slit pockets and is sometimes accompanied by a lapel that “falls” over the lacing. It is worth noting that in recent years, the trend has leaned toward two-button jackets that follow your torso's shape without being too tight.

READY-TO-WEAR OR CUSTOM-MADE: UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

Beyond style, it is important to understand that the manufacturing method of a men’s suit significantly affects its quality, comfort, and price. Our menswear specialists explain the three main categories of options available: ready-to-wearmade-to-measure, and bespoke suits.

Ready-to-wear suit (RTW)

A “ready-to-wear” suit is mass-produced according to standardized sizes and is available immediately in-store. Its quality varies by brand, which is why the choice of fabric and finishing details is crucial. After purchase, it can be altered by a tailor for a perfect fit and impeccable drape.

Custom-made suit (MTM / Bespoke)

A custom-made suit is specially designed for an individual and is therefore a unique garment. It is divided into two subcategories:

- Made-to-measure (MTM)

“Made-to-measure” refers to a suit where an existing base pattern is adjusted to your personal measurements. It is a good compromise between fit quality, production time, and budget. This type of men’s suit is available in certain specialized stores, including Ernest.

- Bespoke (full custom)

A “bespoke” suit is made from a unique pattern based entirely on your measurements, without relying on standard sizes. Every detail — fabric, lining, buttons — is carefully selected. Its handcrafted construction guarantees exceptional quality and fit. This process naturally requires more time and greater investment, reflecting its exclusivity.

A tuxedo is the most elegant choice if you are the groom. As a guest, a classic navy or dark grey suit is perfectly appropriate.

What is the difference between a classic suit and a sports suit?

With its clean lines, the classic suit is formal. The sports suit is more casual and features fewer rigid details. It is ideal for everyday wear.

Does Ernest offer made-to-measure suits?

Yes, our in-store advisors can guide you toward made-to-measure suit options tailored to your body shape.

How can you tell the difference between a double-breasted suit and a single-breasted suit?
